Our house was a place where you were welcome to make an idiot out of yourself. Silliness was valued. My dad worked with foster kids in the foster care system, and I think silliness was a way for him to leaven things up.
Copy Quote View & ShareI used to be a calligrapher for weddings and events - that was my side job while I was auditioning. I think handwritten notes are a lost art form. When I booked my first pilot, my dad wrote me a letter that I still have. The idea of someone taking the time to put pen to paper is really special.
Copy Quote View & ShareI had Hallowe'en parties every year, as it was my birthday five days before. My parents would actually put prosthetic noses on, and my dad would wear a top-hat and tails, put on a fake curly moustache, and hold a pipe.
Copy Quote View & ShareMom and Dad would stay in bed on Sunday morning, but the kids would have to go to church.
Copy Quote View & ShareI'm a four star general in this thing, and you don't rise to the ranks of a four star general by hanging about the house being the perfect dad.
Copy Quote View & ShareWhen I was growing up, my dad didn't have weights, so he made himself a weight bench. Instead of a hand-me-down jacket, it was a hand-me-down weight bench.
Copy Quote View & ShareMy father grew up in Levittown, L.I., in the first tract housing built for G.I.'s. His dad had stormed the beaches of Omaha and died when my father was very young. My dad had to raise himself, pretty much.
Copy Quote View & ShareThe suburban dad is the worst dressed subset in America, which is especially disheartening when you consider the country club's many great style icons.
Copy Quote View & ShareDad didn't wear the guns unless a report card came in that he didn't particularly dig.
Copy Quote View & ShareMy dad? He died when I was 19, which is a bad time for your dad to die, because there's an awful lot of things you have to resolve with your parents past your teens if you've been a difficult teenager.
Copy Quote View & ShareMy mother told me, 'Always do your best,' and my dad says, 'It's important to be humble. That's the key. They're not there for you. You're there for them.'
Copy Quote View & ShareMy dad was an FBI agent. My mom and dad were straight arrow types, and I had a conservative, suburban Orange County upbringing.
Copy Quote View & ShareI use wrestling as my connection with my dad because that's something that me and him shared.
Copy Quote View & ShareThe one thing that kept our family together was the music. The only thing that our family would share emotionally was to have our dad cry over something the kids did with music.
Copy Quote View & ShareI used to play in bands and my dad, he's a big Beatles fan, so I grew up on a lot of Beatles and you kind of find your own way in music.
Copy Quote View & ShareMy dad was really complex, and I was raised by that. My mom is really bright - very book bright - and so those things collide... I learned that I could put all of that stuff together in the world of acting, and I could make a dollar at it.
Copy Quote View & ShareMy dad is a fan of football, too, and did a good job of making me understand the history of football.
Copy Quote View & ShareGreat dad. Yeah, he would ask me for money on birthdays and, you know, inappropriate times. And I just wrote him off like, 'You're not a father.' I just learned you cannot emotionally invest in people who are not attainable.
Copy Quote View & ShareWhen I was nine or 10, I remember having a dinner party at my mum and dad's house. I wanted to have a Thanksgiving dinner because I'd watched so many films that had Thanksgiving in it and I thought: 'Why do we not celebrate this?' So I cooked this big Thanksgiving dinner for probably 10 people and I wouldn't let anybody help me.
