I don't want to feel like a failure to my daughter. She's the best thing I've ever done. Buffy - pretty great and all, but Charlotte's way better.
Copy Quote View & ShareEven in a gleefully negative comic, there is optimism, although it's slightly hidden: It comes out through a comic character's sheer tenacity. He keeps going and trying to find some sort of fulfillment regardless of his perpetual failure record. That's a form of hope, a form of optimism. Really hokey I know, but it's true.
Copy Quote View & ShareI was brought up to believe that there is no such thing as failure as long as I'm trying my best. So I've had a 'blood, guts and glory' approach through my whole life.
Copy Quote View & ShareThe biggest problem in my life is trying to be the kind of man that I want to be, the father that I want to be, and how to process the failure of my marriage.
Copy Quote View & ShareI've had great success and I've had catastrophic failure. It's really how you handle the rough stuff that defines you, I think.
Copy Quote View & ShareWe feel a lot of pressure about looking silly or appearing weak, whatever that means, or being a failure. You have to keep in your head: what's the worst that can happen?

Copy Quote View & ShareThere comes a point in your moviegoing life where you look at the screen and then you look at the world and you ask, 'What is going on?' Copy Quote View & ShareYou get so afraid of failure and so afraid of losing and so afraid of not being the best that it's not a natural drive - it's born out of fear of failure. Which helps in Hollywood.
Copy Quote View & ShareMy work ethic came from my parents and my fear of failure. I came from a small, predominantly black school and I didn't want to let them down.
Copy Quote View & ShareI don't have a fear factor. Well, not much of one. And I'm willing to risk quite a lot - as a comedian, you're always risking a lot. You're risking failure, especially if you're improvising and going on TV shows trying to make comedy out of thin air. That is quite a risky business.
Copy Quote View & ShareThat's the conundrum of cartoon stripping, as opposed to political cartoons. When your anger is the driving force of your drawing hand, failure follows. The anger is OK, but it has to serve the interests of the heart, frankly.
Copy Quote View & ShareI don't need to be looking at every failure of government, I need to be looking where failure of government needs reform.
Copy Quote View & ShareI've become a professional failure - in order to pay the mortgage I have to remain unemployed. Luckily, a disaster always seems to befall me at exactly the right moment.
Copy Quote View & ShareAmerica thinks of itself as a meritocracy, so people have more respect for success and more contempt for failure.
Copy Quote View & ShareIn Britain, by contrast, we still think that class plays a part in determining a person's life chances, so we're less inclined to celebrate success and less inclined to condemn failure. The upshot is that it's much easier to be a failure in Britain than it is in America.
