But poetry is a way of language, it is not its subject or its maker's background or interests or hobbies or fixations. It is nearer to utterance than history.
Copy Quote View & ShareSo I suppose poetry, language, the shaping of it, was and remains for me an effort to make sense out of essentially senseless situations.
Copy Quote View & SharePoetry had far better imply things than preach them directly... in the open pulpit her voice grows hoarse and fails.
Copy Quote View & ShareI was influenced by surrealist poetry and painting as were thousands of other people, and it seems to me to have become a part of the way I write, but it's not.
Copy Quote View & ShareA public expectation, it has to be said, not of poetry as such but of political positions variously approvable by mutually disapproving groups.
Copy Quote View & ShareArt works because it appeals to certain faculties of the mind. Music depends on details of the auditory system, painting and sculpture on the visual system. Poetry and literature depend on language.
Copy Quote View & ShareWhen I was in college, I used to write little ditties and short stories and poetry for my friends. Writing a book is another thing. It is so much different from my traditional day of dirty fingernails and greasy hair and hot pans.
Copy Quote View & ShareI think poetry has lost an awful lot of its muscle because nobody knows any. Nobody has to memorize poetry.

Copy Quote View & ShareI want to promote poetry to the point where you got all the baldhead kids running around doing poetry, getting the music out of the way and having only words, the spoken word, and then see what happens.
Copy Quote View & ShareI had art as a major, along with English, French and History. I had dance, modern dance. In English I was allowed to write my own poetry, which I eventually got published.

Copy Quote View & ShareBut one does not make living writing poetry unless you're a professor, and one frankly doesn't get a lot of girls as a poet.
Copy Quote View & ShareI think that is where poetry reading becomes such an individual thing. I mean I have friend who like poets who just don't say anything to me at all, I mean they seem to me rather ordinary and pedestrian.
Copy Quote View & ShareOf course a poem is a two-way street. No poem is any good if it doesn't suggest to the reader things from his own mind and recollection that he will read into it, and will add to what the poet has suggested. But I do think poetry readings are very important.
